South Africa's Frist Lady of Letters...Nadine Gordimer

Nadine Gordimer has written 14 novels, over 200 short stories, and many essays. Gordimer's writing career began when she wrote a short story at 15. Her first novel was The Lying Days, published 1953. Apartheid and racism have been common topics in Nadine's writing. With Apartheid now abolished, Nadine has set her focus on important issues such as HIV/AIDS and the environment. When asked whether she began writing to protest Apartheid, Nadine says:

The 'problems' of my country did not set me writing; on the contrary, it was learning to write that sent me falling, falling through the surface of the South African way life.
